John Roulstone's birth
certificate shows that he was born in Strelley
in the County of Nottingham . On the 1861
Census, he is shown as being 17 years old, working as
a Footman in a Hall at Kimberley Rd, Bilborough, for James
Thomas Edge (map-1885).
John is then believed to of moved to Cambridge Gardens,
Kilburn, Middlesex, where he married Mary Jane Harris on
the 24th July 1870. On the Marriage Certificate John is
described as being a Domestic Servant, and Jane is described
as being a Domestic Servant, both living at 2 Cambridge
Gardens, Kilburn, Middlesex.The 1871 census shows john as
being a Visiting Servant at Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire,
the census also shows Lord Wharncliffe visiting at the same
time, this was most probably Johns employer. Later John
and Mary moved to Hanover Square, Westminster, London as
shown on John's first child's birth certificate, John is
described as being a Valet. John's first child Mary Elizabeth
Jane Roulstone, was born at 1a Mount Row in Hanover Square.
John and Mary moved to Wortley near Sheffield, where John
worked as a Butler for Lord Wharncliffe. The 1881 census
shows John as being a Butler.
Later in his life, John
Roulstone's profession was promoted to House Steward of
Wortley Hall for Lord Wharncliffe (whose fortune came from
coal mines in the area of South Yorks and Penistone).
A House Steward was responsible for the general management
of a property. John and his family lived on the Wortley
Hall estate until John's death in 1908.
John William Roulstone
was present at both John and Mary's death. Both John and
Mary Jane Roulstone are buried in Wortley, Yorkshire.

Flora House, Grindleford, Derbyshire.
Mary Jane was the daughter
of Samual Harris, Publican, and Jane Harris (nee Hobbis)
of Grove, Wantage, Berkshire. Following John's death, Mary
moved to Grindleford with her unmarried daughter Mable,
to live until she died in 1921 aged 78. Mary was then buried
in Wortley.
Mary was a cousin to Sir
John Harris, who was Knighted for his contributions towards
the abolition of slavery.

Mabel
Roulstone
Born 1880
Wortley, Yorkshire.
Mabel Roulstone never married. She was head housekeeper
at the house next door to where Winston Churchill
grew up. She had a stroke when she was 42.
