Reverend Richard Rolleston was born at Repton, baptised at Rolleston 4 April 1581, son of Edward Rolleston, cleric, rector at Rolleston. Richard married 18 Jan 1607 his 2nd cousin Elizabeth Rolleston who was bapt at Rolleston 15 Oct 1583, dau of Gilbert Rolleston, lord of the manor of Rolleston. Richard & Eliz, along with her brothers John & Arthur, obtained a grant of 1000 acres in county Armagh, known as the manor of Teemore, during the Plantation of Ulster 1610. Around 1630-ish Teemore was mortgaged to Sir Francis Annesley and through apparently devious means he foreclosed on the mortgage and obtained possession. The Rollestons were unable to recover the lands. Four of Richard & Eliz's sons, Edward, Ralph, Thomas & John were killed by Irish during the 1641 rebellion. Two other sons, Richard & Henry died near the same time. A daughter Susanna lived to 1675 and died without issue. With her death, Rev. Richard Rolleston's direct line became extinct.
His cousin Arthur and wife Eleanor, through their son Francis (Colonel Francis Rolleston of Tomlough or Townlough, see his portrait on this website) was ancestor to the senior surviving branch of Rollestons who obtained the estate of Franckfort Castle by marriage and which line continues to the present day.
How much do you want to know Peter?
Are you connected to the Irish families?
